How we choose

Our New Zealand criteria.

There is no single national star-style food hygiene score, so we use the official food-safety information that is actually available locally.

Strong public reputation

Meaningful review volume and consistently strong feedback across Google, Tripadvisor and other relevant local sources.

Official food-safety information

New Zealand food businesses are registered and verified under the Food Act. Where councils publish an additional grade, such as Auckland's EatSafe system, we use that information too.

Food worth travelling for

Regional specialities, excellent classics, standout dumplings or noodles, local institutions and restaurants doing something particularly well.

Independent selection

Restaurants cannot pay to qualify. Paid profile enhancements are separate from the editorial decision to include a restaurant.

Food-safety framework: New Zealand Food Safety / MPI. Auckland also operates its own public EatSafe grading system for eligible businesses.
